The Light at Night

I’ve talked about “community” and the talented people on board our ship from several different angles. This one is a very different angle.

A man stands at a lectern facing a stage, while a woman in a red dress stands near two chairs and microphones. A screen behind them displays The Light Night with Lindsey Dinneen. The setting appears to be a talk show.
Behind the Scenes: Getting ready for the first show with Kevin and Lindsey, from the audience point of view. (Randy Cassingham)

A TV show?!

Sort-of.

One of the residents had a dream about hosting a late night talk show in the old style. These days, talk shows are about the biggest celebrities they can book who come on and spent 30-90 seconds talking about their spouse and/or kids (you know, to show what wonderful humans they are), plug their latest project, and then leave.

Repeat ad-freaking-nauseum.

If you’re old enough (cough — I am) you remember when talk shows were cool. Johnny had conversations with his guests. They weren’t just celebrities: sometimes he had kids on, or someone who was “simply” 105 years old. They were just interesting folks, and it was fun to watch them interact with Johnny.

Yeah, and sometimes celebrities too.

Lindsey wanted to do that. Here, she can.

Lindsey Dineen and her husband, Kevin, have put their talents together to create the first TV series to be produced aboard a Residential Cruising ship. In my opinion, it was excellent, especially considering it was a first effort.

It’s an “hour” (likely not ever exactly that, but that’s the schedule).

The Light at Night

…with Lindsey Dineen. Kevin serves as the announcer and producer. (Spoiler: he is not the same Kevin Dinneen as the Canadian former hockey player and coach.)

You Might Recognize…

A couple of the guests might look familiar. They might even be on more than occasionally.

I encourage you to watch the whole thing, at least to see what you think. But if you want to jump to the chase on a couple of segments:

20:05 Randy talks about the origin of This is True and the True Stella Awards. The “Michael Jordan” lawsuit is here. I remembered the numbers wrong: he was suing Michael Jordan and Phil Knight for almost a billion dollars total, not around a billion dollars each.

40:20 Kit talks about creating Speakers Corner, and who’s coming up next.

It was a lot of fun, and there was a pretty big audience who turned up to watch.

I won’t be posting the videos here each week, even if Kit and I are on: you’ll have to subscribe at Youtube if you’d like to see them as they are released. More, this is an example of the possibilities of a Residential Cruising lifestyle. This idea was good enough to bring a crowd. That helps motivate continued creativity, and we were happy to be a small part of it.

  1. Thanks for sharing. Great job by everyone. It’s very reminiscent of the programs available on local radio and TV stations in rural parts of the country. Although, as you point out, your community’s mobility sets it apart from the rest.

Serving local communities is very important. Internet, TV, radio, newspapers, etc, all back one another up to keep everyone informed and connected.

Great observations. It’s all part of what keeps community connected. -rc

  2. Being Residential Cruise might give them even more opportunities — have they thought about bringing local people on board? Local celebrities (whether anyone outside the locality knows ’em or not), local politicians (spit! but some may be not smarmy), that guy on the corner that everybody knows?

Due to security, it’s difficult to get people onboard, especially at short notice. But hmmmmmm… a “Man on the Street” interview series could be kind of cool. I’ll pass that along. -rc
